May 21 The Education of Technical Communicators–Never Ending

0
0

Dave Gardner will discuss what a technical communicator must learn and keep current with. Also, touched on will be the required skills, tools, terminologies and complexities of the industries, fields, and topics in which we work. This discussion looks at technical communication only from the perspective of the writing and editing, and not from illustration or programming needs.

There’s more to technical communications than how it is presented in academia and business–both sides are frequently unaware of the requirements of this profession, what is out there, and where we are now.

Dave will have suggestions on what you can do to “break in” to the profession.

About Dave Gardner

Dave Gardner has a B.A. degree in biology with a minor in chemistry from the University of Guam, with coursework toward an M.S. in marine biology from the University of Guam. He has a Certificate in Alternate Energy Education from the University of Hawaii Manoa Campus. He has gone through the two-year program at U.C. Santa Cruz Extension in Santa Clara for a Certificate in Management of Technical Documentation and Publications. He has taken computer science classes at New Mexico State University and at Las Positas Community College in Livermore. He has studied for and passed the Cisco Certified Networking Associate exam and has also gone through weeklong “bootcamps” — one in Agile Software Development Methods and one for DITA-XML.

Specializing in some field is a good idea for folks wanting to stay current in the industry. If someone is good with hardware illustration (it used to be that *technical illustrators* would do this stuff), that is a very marketable skill (for a tech writer, I guess).  If someone can do programming or API documentation, that’s a good deal.  I have decided to jump into IT security from a management point of view — in particular, security governance and regulatory compliance.

February 19, 2018: What Hiring Managers Really Need

Recording can be found here.

Do you despair about qualifying for a technical communications position because you don’t have all the skills and experience they demand? You might be surprised how many of a typical tech writing job’s “requirements” are pure fantasy.

Andrew will pull back the curtain on the tech industry’s recruiting process, show you how to interpret typical posting’s wishlists, and help you prove you already have (most of) what they seek. He’ll share resume, interview, and portfolio tips for convincing hiring teams that you’re their best bet. If asked, he can also discuss current compensation trends — so you don’t leave money on the table — and how to secure the kinds of benefits you care about, like work-from-home, paid training, customer interaction, and promotions.

In a full-employment economy driven by well-funded tech companies that know they need better doc, we’ll discuss how you can solve your potential boss’ pain points. Bring your questions and eat well beforehand; Andrew will be the last to leave the room.

April 16, 2018: The 7 Deadly Sins of Brainstorming

0

This month’s presentation is something a little bit different, and a lot more interactive!

Brainstorming is like a hammer – everyone has seen one, but few actually use it to its fullest potential. It is usually done on the fly, and the results are interesting but nothing seems to change after a session. Why? Because one or more of the 7 deadly sins of brainstorming have been committed. Ed Borowiec, a former technical writer for Seagate and others, demonstrates how a team can generate ideas most effectively. If you have led or worked on a team of writers, this fun & inclusive session may help you broach outside-the-box solutions in a constructive setting.
