Job Title: Technical Writer with Linux experience
Start Date: ASAP
Job Duration: Until mid-June
Description:

If you are a technical writer who has worked on Cisco Prime, Cisco View, or LAN Manager please read on.

We need to hire a writer to work in the San Jose, CA area, starting ASAP through early- to mid-June.

The person must be onsite the first two weeks, and thereafter “as needed.” Should the person work out well, there is a high probability of further work. This is in a networking software BU.

The project is as follows:

  1. Single Server Installation for 6.2 – Update existing software (Linux) Installation Guides for this release.
  • New packages getting installed.
  • New services to add.

  • HA Configuration – How to configure the above in a cluster (multi-server) environment.
    • This will be very complex. The person will have 6 VMs, and they must be able to use these VMs to configure HA successfully in order to document it.
    • If they can’t work alone in a Linux (operating system) environment, then they won’t be able to do this.

This will be written in unstructured FMv11, and will likely be part of the above Installation Guides.

  • Serviceability Web UI – This is a new web UI with 3 dashboards.
    • Log aggregation -> Aggregates logs from a variety of products configured in the HA cluster.
    • Metrics -> Provide metrics for such items as CPU, memory, load, disk space, heap size, and network usage.
    • Health -> Process monitoring.

This goes into a Guide that is written in structured FMv9. We’d like these pages to be converted to unstructured FMv11, and the new content written in it as well.

The standards are high. The environment is tough. The candidate needs some familiarity with working in Linux on their own. Not experts… But able to do it.

The candidate must be a self-starter who is not reliant on specs, can try things out on their own, and knows how to ask the right questions to extract the info from the very busy experts.

Must have extremely good project management skills, and Agile experience is a plus.

Apply to nhayes@bardnangleann.com, with an up-to-date resume. Please state your current hourly rate on a 1099 contract.

Join us this Friday, March 6 at noon PST for a webinar with Joe Welinske.

Key Trends in Software User Assistance

User assistance is much more than “Help.” It encompasses a wide range of skills and technologies that are combined to improve the software user’s experience. We contribute through wizards, tutorials, and web-based training. We develop and populate knowledge bases and content management systems.

Printed manuals and their PDF equivalents are still an important element of our documentation sets. Many of us are now embedding helpful content directly into the user interface. We are involved with usability testing, localization, testing, quality assurance, and branding.

This presentation provides a cutting-edge overview of the latest trends in software user assistance, defines the key terminology, highlights the most important technologies, and offers predictions on future directions of our field.

    About Joe Welinske

Joe Welinske specializes in helping your software development effort through crafted communication. The best user experience features quality words and images in the user interface. The UX of a robust product is also enhanced through comprehensive user assistance. This includes Help, wizards, FAQs, videos and much more.

For over twenty-five years, Joe has been providing training, contracting, and consulting services for the software industry. Joe recently published the book, Developing User Assistance for Mobile Apps. He also teaches courses for Bellevue College, the University of California, and the University of Washington. Description:

Electric Cloud, Inc. is a software company that helps organizations deliver better mobile, embedded, and enterprise web or IT applications faster. Wherever you are along your continuous-delivery journey, we’re ready to help by providing the industry’s only unified platform for automating the biggest bottlenecks in the software delivery lifecycle.

We have an immediate need to hire a contractor to do some technical writing work for one of our products, which will be released to customers in mid-June. This project is mainly a complex rebranding effort in the product document set, because another software product is being merged into it. Job Description:
Rebrand software documentation, including user guides, installation guides, online Help, release notes, and technical notes.

    Job Responsibilities:

    • Revise multiple documents in a fast-paced agile environment.

    Requirements and Skills:

    • 3 to 7+ years of experience with technical writing in a frequently-changing agile environment.
    • Must have experience with Madcap Flare or equivalent authoring tools, HTML- and XML-editor tools, and graphics software (Visio-like tools).
    • Work independently to meet milestones and deadlines in a frequently-changing fast-paced environment.
    • Written and verbal communication, listening, organizational, interpersonal, research, and problem-solving skills.
    • Bachelor’s degree in technical writing, English, journalism, communications, or a related field.
    • Experience working with teams in multiple geographic locations.
